1st Winner for Designing 30th Surveyor Indonesia Anniversary Logo

Story

On June 28, 2021, Surveyor Indonesia, a state-owned company specializing in testing, inspection, and certification, opened a logo competition to the public. Intrigued by this opportunity, I decided to participate. Personally, I serve as a Data Analyst in one of their sub-operations, specifically in the Import Verification division in Indonesia through the Kerja Sama Operasi Sucofindo — Surveyor Indonesia.

By July 12, 2021, the competition had received a total of 55 submissions, accumulating 6579 likes. I was thrilled to learn that I emerged as the 1st place winner. Subsequently, Surveyor Indonesia’s representatives contacted me to handle various documentation and preparations for an Instagram filter.

Note: I added extra value to my design by distinguishing it from other participants. I took the initiative to incorporate animation, an Instagram filter, and a mockup.

Design Thinking as Method

Empathize

To initiate the design process, I conducted thorough research, delving into the company’s history, vision, mission, core values, and more, sourced from its official website https://www.ptsi.co.id/. I considered this step essential because understanding the entity on a deeper level is crucial for creating a design that resonates.

As I mentioned, objectivity is paramount in this initial phase. I aimed to adopt Surveyor Indonesia’s perspective, acknowledging their challenges and anticipating the needs, expectations, desired representation, and goals they aimed to achieve with the new logo.

Define and Ideation

Once I had a comprehensive understanding of Surveyor Indonesia’s history, vision, mission, and core values, I moved on to the Define and Ideation phase. In this crucial stage, I aimed to crystallize the insights gained from my research into a clear and focused design direction.

Define: I carefully defined the key elements and attributes that the logo needed to embody. This involved distilling the essence of Surveyor Indonesia’s identity and articulating the specific messages and values the logo should convey. It was essential to outline the parameters within which the design should operate, ensuring that it aligns seamlessly with the company’s ethos.

Ideation: With a well-defined scope, I entered the ideation phase. This involved generating creative concepts and exploring diverse design possibilities. I brainstormed various visual elements, symbols, and styles that could effectively represent Surveyor Indonesia’s commitment to testing, inspection, and certification. The ideation process encouraged experimentation and allowed for the exploration of innovative and unique approaches to capture the essence of the company.

During this phase, I considered factors such as symbolism, color schemes, typography, and the overall visual narrative. It was important to strike a balance between creating a visually compelling logo and ensuring that it resonated with Surveyor Indonesia’s stakeholders and audience.

By combining a thorough definition of design parameters with a creative and exploratory ideation process, I aimed to develop a concept that not only met the company’s requirements but also exceeded expectations, providing a fresh and impactful representation for their 30th anniversary celebration.

Prototype and Test

Given that the logo would be part of a competition, I proceeded with the prototyping and testing phase to the judges. This involved allowing them to assess, evaluate, and rate the design. Testing was crucial to ensure the logo aligns with the company’s image and would serve as a fitting face for their upcoming anniversary event.
